Ride the waves

You may not be able to stop the waves, but you can learn to surf-2.png

What do your waves of nervousness feel like? If you’re like me then you’ll feel like you have your heart beating out of your chest, breathing becomes shallow (not great for a trumpet player!), the dreaded shakes begin, and your mouth is as dry as the desert (again, not great for a trumpet player!).

Whilst a bit inconvenient when these guys rock up just before heading on stage, I’ve learned that the waves are just my body getting ready and geared up for a great performance ahead, rather than something that is going to be detrimental to my performance.

How we interpret our symptoms of nervousness and anxiety play an important role in how our body and mind react to them. To recognize our own symptoms as a normal part of performing can greatly reduce worry and anxiety, and keep us more in control of the situation. Being concerned about your heart beating faster will only lead to more worry, which makes your heart beat even faster, which leads to more worry etc. etc.

Accept that the waves will come, let them come, and enjoy the ride!
